A length-measuring device (1) is provided with a boss (8) establishing a reference point to one surface of the object (23), and a feeler (20) with a convex tip (21) set in a holder (14) on a sliding carriage (10) for contact with the other surface. Phase-shifted measurement signals are conveyed (16) to an external electronic circuit (17) which combines signals proportional to distances from the sliding plate (11) to the boss and feeler. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for digital vernier caliper. Accuracy within about 1 micron over wide range, without parallax errors.
