The invention relates to a process for producing brown coal compacts having a reduced SO2 emission on combustion, in which sulphur-binding additives are added to the brown coal. It is an object of the invention to develop a process which effects more complete binding of sulphur in the ash, without having an adverse effect on the production of the compacts. This object is achieved by mixing the raw brown coal with suspended sulphur-binding Ca additives and adding a binding-inert fuel, in particular ground bituminous coal coke, to the mixture.
