In order to decrease the pollution of air particularly with ozone, but also with hydrocarbons in the printing and coating industry (corona units, UV driers, electron-beam driers), a so-called UV catalytic converter was developed. This is a reaction chamber in which pollutants stimulated by UV light convert to less harmful products on a catalytic surface. The UV catalysis is an exhaust air purification process which succeeds with minimum energy input. This is achieved by only the pollutant to be disposed of being energetically stimulated. If, nevertheless, a secondary reaction in a second catalytic reaction chamber is necessary, a relatively small catalytic converter is sufficient, since the majority of the pollutants are already transformed in the UV catalytic converter.
