If the exchange line (AL) is switched over to the hold condition while an external call is in progress, it can initially be seized again only by the telephone terminal which initiated this hold condition (exclusive hold condition). After a predefined period of time, this switching condition is automatically changed in such a way that a transition from the exclusive hold condition to a so-called general hold condition is effected. The held exchange line can then also be seized by any further telephone terminal (EGn) to which exchange line access authorisation has been granted. A held exchange call can be transferred to a different telephone terminal through the dialling of a code digit, without the handset on the telephone terminal (EG1) which originally initiated the hold condition being replaced.
