The UV (ultraviolet) radiator is provided with a reflector housing which is divided into two parts in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the radiation source. Both parts are fitted so as to be pivotable about an axis which extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the radiation source, so that in one end position of both parts the reflector housing is open on that side facing the object to be irradiated and in the second end position of both parts the latter form, with their regions facing towards the object, a screen between radiation source and transport web, as a result of which the object is screened with respect to the radiation source. The procedure in this case can be such that in the case of piece by piece transport of the articles or, if appropriate, even a material web, the duration of the effect of the radiation on the object is controlled by means of corresponding actuation of the reflector housing parts.
