The application for patent rights comprises a method of machining a wheel set in a wheel lathe with friction rollers. Floor-mounted wheel lathes have clamping jaws for driving the wheel set. Clamping jaws of this type cause notches in the wheel set which lead to cracks in the wheel disc. The apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the friction rollers can be placed against premachined surfaces of the wheel flange, and the wheel set is driven and/or supported on this premachined surface for profiling and/or reprofiling. The wheel set is thereby stabilised during changes in the cutting force.
