According to the invention a piston for a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine with at least one piston is proposed, the piston (2) being connected by way of a connecting rod (3) to a crankshaft (14) and with its side remote from the crankshaft (14) closing off a compression chamber (5), a combustion chamber (7), connected to the compression chamber (5) by way of a nozzle-shaped opening (6), furthermore being arranged in the piston (2) and the piston (2) carrying at least one piston ring (10, 17, 18) in a piston ring groove (9). In this arrangement, the piston (2) is rigidly connected to the connecting rod (3), and a narrow annular surface is formed by the minimum of one piston ring (10) for guiding the piston (2), from which surface the external contour of the piston (2) tapers upwards and downwards.
