The apparatus for dewatering sludge layers on belt filter units comprises a frame having drums arranged therein at a distance to each other, of which one is driven and round which there runs a flexible, endless belt. The frame containing the pressing belt arranged therein is connected to the belt filter via a hinge and, in operation, performs vibrating motions towards the filter belt and away from this, the pressing belt circulating in the same direction as the filter belt and the magnitude of the vibrating motion being adjustable.
