Differential gear drive axle housing for electric vehicle

A drive axle for an electric vehicle has a housing (1) containing an electric motor (2) with a hollow shaft (10), connected to a differential cage (4). One drive shaft (6) extends from the differential through the hollow motor shaft and a bearing to a final drive gearbox (8) bolted to the end face of the housing. The other drive shaft similarly goes to a final drive gearbox at the other end. Both of these gearboxes are oil-filled and the differential is lubricated by oil flow from the left-hand one along the space between the drive shaft and the hollow shaft. The housing has openings (13) to allow ventilation of the differential case as it rotates. A sensor (15, 16) measures the speed of the rotating case.
