A system for measuring the temperature of a heating surface e.g. the ceramic plate (1) of a cooking hob employs a sheet metal thermal -transfer strip (5) which carries a radiant energy receiving plate (4) of e.g. stainless steel which readily absorbs the longwave energy transmission from the ceramic (1) and reflects shortwaves. The strip (6) is ring-formed making good thermal contact with a relatively cool reference surface (2) is surrounded by a convection screen (11) and carries a temperature-sensing element (9). An upper enclosing surface (3) is provided with an aperture (10) permitting efficient radiation of the plate (4) across the clearance gap and a further temperature sensor (12) indexes the reference surface (2).
