Automatic computer based detection and classification of road or rail traffic

The computer based system employs an optical scanning system based upon a double time scanning arrangement that allows a 3D image of a road or rail vehicle to be obtained and allows vehicle changeover from one lane or track to another to be tracked. The system used linear fibre optical arrays, the sensor function being provided by an infra-red laser. The line change-over is determined by correlation between the lines. The computer calculates speed, vehicle size and type.
