It is the aim of the invention to provide a process for separating metal ions from a solids-charged solution, in which a pre-treated commercially available ion exchanger can be used. In addition, a pre-treated ion exchanger is to be proposed. In the process of the invention, an ion exchanger consisting of a granulated resin material is brought into contact firstly with a solution containing Fe2+ ions and then with an alkaline medium, and then oxidised. The solids-charged solution of metal ions is added to the ion exchangers of the invention thus pre-treated and the charged ion exchanger is removed from the solids-charged solution by magnetic separation.
