The invention relates to a process for making use of scrap plastic-coated wiring consisting of a metal core and a plastic covering in which the metal parts are separated from the covering and recovered separately. The scrap wiring is milled and the product is softened in a swelling container (10) with a swelling agent for the plastic. After softening, the material with the swelling agent is taken to a taper-roller mill (13) which mills the product and mechanically destroys the macro-structure of the pieces of cable. The metal particles are separated from the sheathing by stirring in an agitator (14) and the multi-phase mixture is taken to a metal sedimenter (16) in which the metal particles are taken to the bottom by gravity and are separated from the lighter plastic particles. The conveying flow rate in the metal sedimenter (16) is adjusted so that the metal particles sink at the different rates dictated by their size as far as the outlet from the sedimenter (16). A swelling agent counterflow is directed into the conveying current which separates the lighter plastic particles therefrom, whereafter the counterflow with the plastic particles is extracted from the metal sedimenter (16) as a partial current and taken to a plastic sedimenter (38) to separate the plastic particles out. The process is gastight and the swelling agent is cyclically recovered.
