The invention relates to a nonaqueous liquid detergent composition for large-scale laundry operations and to its packaging in laundry unit detergent articles for use in an automatic washing machine. The composition consists of a suspension of solid particles, such as particles of detergent adjuvant, of bleaching agent and other ingredients, in a nonaqueous vehicle consisting of a liquid nonionic surfactant optionally with a solvent of alkylene glycol alkyl ether type as agent for adjusting the viscosity and as antigelling agent. The suspension is stabilised by a modified organophilic smectite-type clay whose metallic cations have been partially or completely exchanged with a quaternary ammonium compound containing one or two long carbon chains. The laundry unit detergent article contains a unit dose of nonaqueous liquid detergent composition in a sachet formed by a water-permeable external packaging, which is insoluble in water, and an internal packaging which is impermeable to liquids and soluble in water, the said sachet optionally being covered with a removable external protective wrapping.
