In fabric fault detection, an initial numerical image of the surface is filtered simultaneously or successively to give an image for the texture to be wholly or partially suppressed. At least one vector matching the structure repeat direction is applied at each basic point of the initial image. A grey level is calculated which is proportional to the absolute difference value of the initial image grey level at the basic point, and its equivalent through the vector, to stimulate the grey level at the basic point.
