The invention has for its object a process for the electrodeposition on the surface of a substrate made of steel with a layer of a coating of a metal alloy based on zinc, of the type znx, x being the second element of this alloy. The method consists in depositing, between the surface of the substrate and the coating layer of said alloy, a layer of coating of said alloy with a percentage of the second element x such that the reduction potential of said alloy of said layer of coating with respect to a saturated calomel electrode is greater than or equal to or substantially lower than the potential of the release of hydrogen on the steel of the substrate, in order to obtain the percentage of the second element x desired. & br / the invention also relates to a material of coated steel, comprising a steel substrate and a coating layer of a metal alloy based on zinc.
