This method consists, in a first reduction step, of opening the keratinous bonds of the hair by application of a reducing agent chosen from an amino or amidothiol or one of their salts and then, in a second step of oxidation, reforming said bonds with the aid of an oxidizing composition or by the action of oxygen in the air, said process being characterized by the fact that before or simultaneously with the application of the reducing agent, it is applied on the hair, as doping agent of said reducing agent, at least one alkaline, alkaline-earth or ammonium bromide. BR/ The composition for carrying out the process contains, in combination, in a suitable cosmetic vehicle, as reducing agent at least one amino or amidothiol or a salt thereof and as a doping agent, said agent reducing agent, at least one alkaline, alkaline earth or ammonium bromide.
