The present invention relates to a device which includes: - a flexible support in the form of a sheet (2), covering the length of the spine to be protected; - and a plurality of shock-absorbing elements of elongate form (3) which are juxtaposed, mounted in line on the support and comprise: means for receiving shocks (4, 6) consisting preferably of rigid or semi-rigid material; bearing means (5) fastened on the said support (2) and preferably consisting of flexible or semi-flexible material; and linking means (6 to 9) interposed between the said receiving means and the said bearing means and comprising a first end integral (8) with the said receiving means (4, 6) and a second end (9) via which the said linking means bear on the said bearing means (5).
