The invention relates to a method for characterising samples of materials in parallel-faced sheet form and a device for implementing this method. The method is based on the interpretation of ultrasound signals. According to the invention, ultrasound wave pulses are applied to a sample of material in a single transverse or longitudinal vibrational mode. The vibrational state changes at the faces of the sheet, which act as a generator of waves in the two modes, the echos (Ei11, Ei21, Ei22, Ei31, Ei32, Ei33) of which are used to determine various characteristic pararmeters of the material.
