The invention relates to a method for characterising samples of materials in parallel-faced sheet form and a device for implementing this method. The method is based on the interpretation of ultrasound signals. According to the invention, ultrasound wave pulses are applied to a sample of material in a single transverse or longitudinal vibrational mode. The vibrational state changes at the faces of the sheet, which act as a generator of waves in the two modes, the echos (Ei11, Ei21, Ei22, Ei31, Ei32, Ei33) of which are used to determine various characteristic pararmeters of the material. Application, in particular, to determining the Young's modulus, the Poisson's coefficient, the Lamé's coefficients and the cubic (bulk) expansion modulus of a material. IMAGE
