The video phones (1-7) of the local network are connected to a digital data transmission network (25) via a signal matching interface (20). A single codec (21) is provided in the local network in order, in one direction, to receive analog signals and transmit digital signals and, in the other direction, to receive digital signals and transmit analog signals. The video phones (1-7) are connected to the codec (21) via switching means (8-9) which are arranged also to connect the video phones (1-7) together, and they are arranged to communicate between each other exclusively by analog signals.
