The modulation recognition involves transforming (2) the intercepted digitally modulated signal to extract digital magnitudes, and comparing (3) these to known magnitudes associated with different types of modulation. The digital magnitudes are determined from the statistical moments of orders 1 to 4 on the amplitude, the phase and the instantaneous frequency of the signal. The relation between these characteristics of the signal and the known signal characteristics is determined by an open loop sigmoid neural net which has previously been apprenticed with examples of the major types of digital modulation.
