Automatic method of maceral analysis and determination of the reflectivity of vitrinite in coals.

Process for maceral analysis of charcoal on a sample consisting of crushed charcoal coated in resin by exploring the surface of the sample by means of a microscope and by measuring the reflectivity of the vitrinite, characterized by the following steps: BR/ - for each field of the microscope, a digitized image at gray levels is produced; BR/ - fields with a high resin content are eliminated by thresholding; BR/ - for each field not eliminated: BR/ a) the distributions of the gray levels and the gradients are determined; BR/ b) a binary image is produced by thresholding the gray gradients so as to determine areas of vitrinite; BR/ c) the distribution of the gray levels or densitometry of the zones of vitrinite obtained is determined; BR/ and BR/ d) the reflectance of the vitrinite is calculated.
