Gear selector enabling transformation of H=pattern gear selection to linear selection in motor vehicle gearbox

The gear selector is attached to the gearbox and operates on the selector finger that engages the rod (5) that operates the selector forks. The mechanism is controlled by a selector driving in rotation an indexed drum made up of four cam plates (10,11,12,13), an indexing cam plate (15) and a cam (14) to operate switches (21-27) that signal the selected gear for display (18) to the driver. The selector (17) is operated by a selector lever that has forward and reverse motion only. The selector can also be operated by electromagnets (2). The cams are shaped so that rotation of the drum alters the gear selection through couplings (9) operating on the selector rods. A cam (31) on the drum shaft operates a contact which initiates operation of the clutch and slowing of the engine.
