Procedure and devices to determine the severity of icing conditions for an aircraft

To determine the severity of icing conditions for an aircraft in flight, a part (1) which projects from the surface of the said aircraft is heated to a known temperature, e.g. 40 DEG C, the total power (Pt) required for the said heating is measured, and the power (Pa) which corresponds to convective thermal exchanges with the ambient air is deducted from the said total power.
