Polymer beads containing antibiotics for use in orthopaedic surgery

Antibiotic bead compositions are produced by homogenising Ticarcillin 5-10pbw, Cefazolin 10pbw, Tobramycin 5-10pbw and Vancomycin 5pbw with 40pbw (120cc) of powder cement, preferably polymethylmethacrylate, and 28pbw (20-30cc) of liquid cement. Beads are cut from the mixture during the hardening process and threaded in chains using a needle. The resulting chains may be implanted into the dead space of saucerized bone in patients with chronic osteomyelitis.
