In a known method of this type for braking a vehicle as rapidly and safely as possible, a greater brake pressure is generated during the automatic braking sequence than results from the brake pedal operating force or the brake pedal position, for which purpose an additional pressure source is used, for example, from a wheel slip control system. The automatic braking sequence is triggered once at least one wheel has attained the locking limit, whereafter the wheels not controlled by the ABS are disconnected from the brake master cylinder pressure and are subjected to the increased brake pressure. …??The new method, during the automatic braking sequence, provides for correlation of the pedal position and the brake pressure for the wheels not controlled by the ABS so that the latter is no greater than is consistent with the position of the brake operating device in the case of normal braking, with the result that, on the one hand, rapid braking of the said wheels is achieved and on the other, the pedal position continues to represent a reliable measure for the brake pressure.
