The assembly comprises an electronically operated valve means responsive to an electronic processor performing repeated control loops. During each control loop in a clutch slipping mode a desired bypass clutch slip is determined by multiplying the actual slip by a factor less than unity such that the desired slip decreases until it equals a target slip evaluated for a particular set of operating conditions. After the actual slip has reached the target slip a hardlock mode is established whereby the torque flow through the converter is completely bypassed. IMAGE
