The present invention relates to a fat cell specific rat &bgr;- adrenergic receptor that mediates lipolysis in rats. The invention further relates to cloned cells which code for the specific &bgr;- adrenergic receptor that mediates lipolysis. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a diagnostic test method for determining decreased levels of fat cell &bgr;-adrenergic receptors that mediate lipotysis in order to diagnosis obesity caused by less active lipolysis.
