Process for the preparation of 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol of the formula IPPHO-CH.sub.2 -CH.sub.2 -C≡C-≡C-CH. sub.2 -OH (I)PPby the reaction of diacetylene of the formula II PP H-C≡C-C≡C-H (II)P P with formaldehyde of the formula IIIPPH.sub.2 C=O (III), PPin the presence of a silver catalysts, in which the reaction is carried out in the presence of a polar organic solvent at temperatures ranging from 0° to 150° C. and under pressures ranging from 0.01 to 10 bar.
