PURPOSE: To control the thickness of a floating filter bed in a treating tank by installing an ultrasonic sensor for measuring the height of the floating filter bed in water or on the wall surface between the bottom part of the treating tank and the floating filter medium bed to make the quality of treated water uniform. CONSTITUTION: Inside a treating tank 11, in water or on the wall surface between a bottom part 11a and a floating filter medium bed 15a of the treating tank 11, plural ultrasonic sensors 24, 25 are arranged on the whole periphery directing toward upper surface. When a raw water to be treated 12 containing solid components is caused to flow in as an upflow from an inflow opening 13, the water 12 makes a filter medium 15 float to form the floating filter medium bed 15a of a specified thickness from the upper surface of the treating tank 11. Ultrasonic waves are sent out toward the floating filter medium bed 15a to measure the thickness of the bed. In this way, even when the turbidity of the water to be treated is bad, the thickness of the floating filter medium bed is easily measured. Water quality is kept uniform from the flat shape of the lower surface of the floating filter medium bed.
