PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a complexing agent useful e.g. for lowering the hardness of water, having low harmfulness and high biological decomposability and capable of improving the frictional and washing fastness of woven fabric and the uniformity of dyed fabric. ;SOLUTION: This complexing agent is composed of a glycine-N,N-diacetic acid derivative of formula (R is a 1-30C alkyl, a 2-30C alkenyl or the like; M is stoichiometrical amount of H, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or the like), e.g. α-alanine-N,N-diacetic acid trisodium salt. It is useful also for the elimination of harmful heavy metals such as iron, copper, manganese or zinc. The exemplified α-alanine-N,N-diacetic acid trisodium salt can be produced by reacting alanine with formaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid and reacting the resultant α-alanine-N,N-diacetonitrile with sodium hydroxide.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
