PURPOSE: To measure the saccharinity of a fruit highly accurately by irradiating the surface of a moving fruit, at different heights thereof, with laser lights having different waveforms for a specified time. ;CONSTITUTION: A melon entering a dark room is irradiated with a laser light having wavelength of 880nm for 20mS at an irradiating position A, a laser light having wavelength of 910nm for 20mS at an irradiating position B, and a laser light having wavelength of 930nm for 20mS at an irradiating position C before leaving the dark room. The laser beam has a beam shape of 2cm long and 0.8cm wide and the laser light is entirely projected within a 2cm square having the center at a point where the longest diameter of the melon matches the axis of the laser light. Absorbances AB1, AB2 and AB3 of the first melon are determined, respectively, for the laser light having wavelengths 880nm, 910nm and 930nm and then the saccharinity is determined based on the absorbances.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
