PRODUCTION OF DIMER OF PHENOLIC HYDROXYL GROUP-CONTAINING CONDENSED MULTICYCLIC COMPOUND

PURPOSE: To profitably and simply produce the subject dimer useful as a synthetic resin-modifying agent, an optically resolving agent, etc., in a state enabling the repeated employment of a catalyst without requiring a complicated purification process by subjecting a phenolic OH-containing condensed multicyclic compound to an oxidative coupling reaction in the presence of a specific catalyst. ;CONSTITUTION: (B) A phenolic OH group-containing condensed multicyclic compound (e.g. a naphthol) is subjected to an oxidative coupling reaction in the presence of (A) the aliphatic carboxylic acid salt of a metal capable of having plural oxidation numbers (e.g. an aliphatic carboxylic acid copper salt or an aliphatic carboxylic acid iron salt) as a catalyst e.g. in an organic solvent (e.g. an organic solvent having a boiling point of ≥60°C, not forming a complex with the component A, and not reacting with the component B) at a temperature of 60-250°C to produce the objective dimer. Therein, the component A is preferably used in an amount of 0.0005-1 mole per mole of the component A.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
