PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain picture frames successively scanned or de-interlaced from the plural fields of an interlaced video signal by using adaptive interpolation for operation switching between global-motion compensated interpolation and spatial interpolation based on the precision of the global-motion compensation using an inter-estimated global field displacement. ;SOLUTION: One field selected from among plural successively interlaced picture fields is processed, and a motion vector estimation 64 of a global-parallel motion between the selected picture fields is formed. The precision map of motion compensation is formed by the global motion vector estimation 64. An adaptive de-interlacer 66 selectively de-interlaces one of the picture fields using the precision map. This picture field is post-processed for removing a jitter artifact appearing in a picture field de-interlaced as a result of erroneous classification of the exact overall motion vector estimation 64 in at least one picture area in the de-interlaced picture field.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
