PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both an apparatus and a method for automatically charging a machine for characterizing mechanical and/or geometrical properties of staple fiber samples. SOLUTION: This apparatus includes a plurality of clamping strips 2 each having a plurality of clamps 3 for receiving fiber samples, at least one reservoir means 5 therefor and a transporter 6 for bringing the clamping strips 2 or the individual fiber samples from the reservoir means 5 into the machine 1. The method includes a step of providing the plurality of clamps 3 in the plurality of clamping strips 2 in order to receive the fiber samples 4 and charging the fiber samples 4, a step of introducing the charged clamping strips 2 into the reservoir means 5 and a step of automaticall bringing the individual clamping strips 2 or the individual fiber samples 4 from the reservoir means 5 through the transporter 6 into the machine 1.
