PURPOSE:To accurate detect fault occurrence by using the OR output between the up-count pulse of a 1st detector and the down-count pulse of a 2nd detector as a count signal and the OR output between the down pulse and up pulse as a reset signal. CONSTITUTION:The OR output (i) between the up-count pulses (e) and (g) of the 1st and 2nd detectors A and B and the OR output (j) between the down count pulses (f) and (h) of the detectors A and B are inputted as the up signal and down signal to an up/down counter 33 respectively to generate a position detection signal. The OR output (k) between the pulses (f) and (g) is inputted as the count signal of a counter 43 and the reset signal of a counter 44 and the OR output l between the pulses (e) and (h) is inputted as the reset signal of the counter 43 and the count signal of the counter 44. Consequently, the counters 43 and 44 normally alternate between 1 and 0, so a fault is judged when a value other than those values is obtained.
