PURPOSE: To detect the position of a break in a short time without deteriorating the detecting accuracy for the position while saving the space and reducing costs in a tensile strength tester. ;CONSTITUTION: Laser beams are emitted from a projecting part 3c of a width- measuring device 3 and detected by a photodetecting part 3d. The laser beams are scanned in a widthwise direction of a test piece 1 and at the same time, the scanning position is shifted. An upper broken piece when the test piece 1 is broken is raised. The position of an edge of a lower broken piece in the widthwise direction is detected at a measuring position on a boundary of a detection section by the width-measuring device 3. Only the presence/absence of a broken piece is detected between the boundaries by the width-measuring device 3. If there is no broken piece, the position of a break is detected from a positional relation between the current scanning position and the detection section. Further, a positional relation between a crack line of the broken piece and the scanning position is detected from the detected position of the edge and a center position in the widthwise direction, so that the position of the break is detected from a positional relation between the detecting result and detection section.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
