PURPOSE: To improve quality of a plotting character by selecting a bit map developing rule. CONSTITUTION: Plural data 15 on which an outline of a character is geometrically defined are stored in a font dictionary 5. A pass constructing part 3 extracts the data 15 corresponding to a character code sent from a client 1, and performs processing such as coordinate transformation, a stem width adjustment and broken line approximation of a curve, and prepares a graphic path 16 geometrically expressed in a common memory 6. The data 15 have a discriminating piece on a developing rule supposed when a character is defined. The developing rule means a rule to be used when a character expressed by the graphic path 16 is developed on a bit map, and for example, the one such as a pixel is marked on a lattice point of coordinates is cited. Plural developing rules are respectively stored in a rule storage part 7 in response to the discriminating piece, and a bit map developing part 4 develops a bit map according to a developing rule corresponding to the discriminating piece on the developing rules of the data 15.
