PURPOSE:To provide a fluorescent material composed of a specific Ce-doped rare-earth oxyhalide fluorescent material, having high accelerated phosphorescence intensity and giving an accelerated phosphorescence spectrum having the peak wavelength shifted toward longer wavelength-side. CONSTITUTION:The objective fluorescent material is expressed by formula [Ln is Y, La, Gd or Lu; X is Cl, Br or I; 0x=0.2; 0.500X/Ln=0.998 (in terms of atomic ratio)] and exhibits an accelerated phosphorescence spectrum having the peak wavelength (lambda) of 550-700nm. The fluorescent material can be produced by mixing the rare-earth metal oxides with Ce, charging the mixture into a heat-resistant container and calcining at 500-1500 deg.C (preferably 700-1400 deg.C) for usually 0.5-20hr (preferably 1-3hr) in N2 gas or weakly reducing atmosphere.
