PURPOSE: To form a coating film having high wear resistance and a full color tone on the surface of a wear resistant member with high dimensional precision by oxidizing a color developing titanium (carbide) film formed on a hard ceramic coating film of a specified thickness in heated steam. CONSTITUTION: The surface of a wear resistant member is coated with one or more ceramic coating films of 0.05-10m thickness, the coating films are coated with titanium or titanium carbide by physical vapor deposition in 0.01-0.2m thickness and the titanium (carbide) is oxidized at 500-600 deg.C in an atmosphere of heated steam having =1% air content. The ceramic coating films prevent the titanium (carbide) from entering into solid soln. in the base material of the member by heating when the base material is a metal and the control of film thickness is not made difficult. The resultant oxidized film is colorless when the thickness is 0.01m and wear resistance is not ensured when the thickness is not within the range of 0.01-0.2m. The thickness of the titanium (carbide) is varied in accordance with the desired color tone. The oxidation temp. is regulated to =500 deg.C so as to form rutile type TiO2 and it is regulated to =600 deg.C so as to prevent the deterioration of the base material. In the case of 1% air content, wear resistance is not ensured.
