PURPOSE: To stably extract features of only a mobile object even when a background changes or includes features similar to the mobile object. ;CONSTITUTION: For the moving picture consisting of the background and mobile object a retrieval area mask generating means 30 previously generates a retrieval area mask. Further, features are extracted from a background image generated by a background image generating means 303 at any time and binarized to generate a binary background feature image. Further, the retrieval area mask and binary background feature image are ANDed to generate a background feature mask which specifies the area obtained by removing pixels corresponding to background features from the retrieval area specified with the retrieval area mask. Then a mask means 314 extracts only the features of the mobile object from an input images wherein features depending upon the background and features that the mobile object has are both present by utilizing the background feature mask.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
