PURPOSE:To measure the distance between own vehicle and a preceding vehicle and to detect the lane change of the preceding vehicle by tracking the preceding vehicle to which own vehicle is following. CONSTITUTION:A tracking window 13 is provided in one image of a pair of upper and lower image sensing devices. A second window 15 for detecting the change of a lane is provided in the lower image. The distance to a preceding vehicle 3 is detected with the tracking window 13 based on the principle of triangulation. The lane change of the preceding vehicle 3 is detected with the second window 15 for detecting the lane change. When the tracked preceding vehicle 3 has changed the lane, the collision to another preceding vehicle which is running on the same running lane of own vehicle can be prevented.
