PURPOSE: To make it possible to reuse a disk sector by distinguishing and error caused by dust from the error caused by a defect in a disk, cleaning the disk and eliminating the defect caused by the dust. ;CONSTITUTION: A user area sector is formatted when an initial disk is loaded, and the address of the sector from which the defect is found is stored in a primary defect list. Then, the address of the sector from which the defect is found while the disk is used thereafter is stored in a secondary defect list to be cleaned. The sector identified as reusable latently after cleaning is re- formatted, and whether or not it is usable at present is decided. The sector identified as reusable is reused according to any one among following three. 1. The sector to be reused is defined as an additional spare sector. 2. The data written in a spare area through the data were expected to be allocated to the area to be reused originally are moved to a reused area, and the spare area is opened. 3.
