PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an inverting circuit of a finite field element that specially occupies a small surface area. ;SOLUTION: A circuit for inverting a number of n bits of a finite field of 2ⁿ=N+1 elements comprises a circuit 10 for receiving and raising a number to be inverted to the power t=2^n/2. A first completed multiplier 12 receives the number to be inverted and the output of the circuit 10 for raising to the power t. An arithmetic circuit 13 outputs the product of the output of the circuit 10 for raising to be power t and the inverse of the output of the first completed multiplier 12.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
