PURPOSE: To provide a device and a method for linearizing gamma corrected components and video input signals through a degamma process for removing the effect of gamma correction so as to provide optimum picture quality in the display due to a spatial optical modulator. ;CONSTITUTION: At processors 12a, 14 and 15 for a digital display device 10 for receiving the gamma corrected components and video input signals for the display due to a spatial optical modulator 16, these video inputs are digitized by an A/D converter 12a, digitized data are converted to RGB color spaces by a color space converter and afterwards, they are linearized by the degamma processor for removing the entire part or one part of gamma correction. Before or after color space conversion and linearization, additional processing such as line generation due to a line generator can be performed. In order to decrease the quantizing effect of digital linearization, various techniques can be executed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
