PURPOSE: To easily, precisely, and quickly analyze color squeezing-out of a colored original picture to be copied by dividing the original picture into bright and dark areas and forming color squeezing-out for evaluation by selecting and/or integrating color squeezing-out, found for the bright area. CONSTITUTION: In order to detect color squeeze-out in a colored original picture, the picture is divided into lightness area BL and BT respectively, having high lightness and low lightness and the color squeezing-out value used for color squeeze-out analysis and evaluation is formed by selecting and/or integrating the color squeezing-out values found from individual lighting area. Therefore, precise scanning and phase scanning are performed along scanning lines for every pixel of the original picture by using a scanner 1 before picture analysis and obtained color values R, G, B are digitize. Then, the digital values are converted into the color values for mapping conversion or phase-frequency processing homochromatic space which is selected by means of a color converter 7 and the converted color values are stored in a phase-frequency processing unit 8b. Thereafter, the results obtained from the color squeezing-out analysis are transferred to an operating terminal 8a so that a picture processing unit 8 can make an optimum picture setting.
