In formula I, each of V and W is H or a substituent having a prescribed Hammett's substituent constant, Y is C=O, C=S, etc., Z is a group of atoms. required to form an arom. ring, X is H or a group which can be released by a coupling reaction with the oxidized product of the developing agent and V-Z may form a dimer as a bivalent combining group or may combine with the principal chain of a polymer through the group. A concrete example of the coupler represented by formula I is a compd. represented by formula II. A metal complex may be used in combination with the coupler so as to improve the stability to light or heat.
