PURPOSE:To reduce decrease in an extinction ratio caused by the extension of a line caused by Gaussian distribution by absorbing various linearly polarized components by a polarizing plate. CONSTITUTION:This optical isolator independent of polarization is composed of two birefringence crystalline plates 1 and 1', two Faraday rotators 2 and 2', polarizing plate 7 adjusted so as to arrange either of bisected bodies on the optical path of either a normal light beam or an abnormal light beam splitted by the birefringence crystalline plates while having bisected structure and making polarizing directions different at 90 deg. each other, and two permanent magnets for magnetizing the Faraday rotators. Since an extinction function depends on the bisected polarizing plate 7, it is possible to obtain an extinction characteristic higher than constitution only using the split of normal and abnormal light beams by the birefringence crystalline plates.
