A mechanism for opening and closing an automatic document feeder comprises a body-side support portion (2) having a post (23) removably insertable into a mount cavity in the body of an apparatus, a feeder-side support portion (3) biased upward by at least one coil spring (4), a pivot (24) pivotally movably supporting the feeder-side support portion (3) on the body-side support portion (2) and positioning means (5) for determining the distance between the pivot and the body.
