PURPOSE: To prevent a tape from being detached from a reel at the time of traveling a magnetic tape cartridge in the form of its tape whose end is not fixed to the reel and to stop the tape traveling without erroneous detection of an EOT hole. ;CONSTITUTION: The tape 7 is travled at a 1st speed to execute the read/write of data. The read/write is stopped in response to the detection of a 1st EOT hole E1. The tape is traveled at a 2nd speed that is slower than the 1st speed in response to the detection of a 2nd EOT hole E2.
